This easy DIY chalkboard is sure to add budget friendly farmhouse cottage character to any home. All you need is an old mirror or frame and some paint!
Let me show you what it looked like BEFORE:

Here is what it looked like once we removed the mirror:
Originally I planned on paining the mirror with chalk paint, but it was so heavy we removed it completely and I painted the back board instead. I used Rust-oleum Chalkboard paint in black and would recommend it for chalkboard paint. I used a roller to apply the paint because I didn’t want any brush marks.
Here are links to the chalkboard paint I used and a similar roller

Next, I painted the frame with my go to DIY Chalk Paint! Side note, I found this recipe over a year ago and make it everytime I need chalk paint. It is amazing! Here is the original recipe by salvagedinspirations.com (The recipe I love is number 2 on the list).
Here is how it looked all finished!
I love being able to add new quotes and motivation, like this sweet message that my 10 year old cousin left me?! This makes me smile every time I look at it!
Tip:
Don’t forget to “season” your new chalkboard before you use it! You can do this by rubbing a piece of chalk long ways on the board to fully coat it with an even layer of chalk powder. Then, use a piece of paper towel or old washcloth to rub all the chalk dust into the board in small circles until all the chalk is wiped away. This will prevent the chalk from getting permanently stuck in the board when you use it for the first time. You can also use this method to get rid of those “ghost” lines that often remain after erasing a chalkboard.
