Our Farmhouse Kitchen restoration isn’t completely done just yet but I am here with an update to share the progress that has been made. Take a walk down memory lane to see just how far this room has come with a bit of time and a whole lot of paint.

Farmhouse Kitchen: BEFORE
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have been working on a kitchen makeover. Our house came with a fully functional kitchen (thankfully); however, the layout and colors were less than ideal. Unfortunately there isn’t much we can do about the wonky layout anytime soon, but if I’ve learned anything about owning a home it’s that paint can go a very long way in transforming a space.
To really appreciate the transformation, let’s take a walk down memory lane…
When we first moved in I decided to paint our countertops to get rid of the dark red (more on that soon!). I knew I wanted to do more in this room but it wasn’t top on the priority list at the time. I knew that just by lightning up the counters it would make a huge difference and allow me to like this space a bit more until I was able to invest more time into making it over.
The light gray counters made a HUGE difference and I was so happy I painted them. However, our black appliances stood out more than I liked which is why I ultimately decided to paint them black (that is the beauty of paint, you can always change your mind)!
Farmhouse Kitchen Restoration Update
Fast forward to a year and a half later and I was ready to tackle this room. I knew this makeover wasn’t going to result in my dream kitchen, but my goal was to create a kitchen within my budget that brought me joy. I started by restoring the original beadboard ceiling. Thankfully it was in decent shape. After a bit of scrubbing, scraping, sanding, washing, priming, and painting the ceiling was in top antique shape.

Once the ceiling was completed I moved on the beadboard walls. I followed the same process I used on the ceiling to restore the walls. Then I began prepping the cabinets and countertops for paint.

I’ll share more about the process of painting cabinets soon, but for now let’s just admire these beauties. I followed the tutorial by Home RenoVision DIY. There was a lot of prep work involved but the transformation of the cabinets and the impact they made on the entire room made it so worth it!
I love our new little breakfast bar with my favorite SMEG kettle and toaster.
Painted Countertops
Although I really liked the light countertops, I decided to repaint them black in an attempt to make the black appliances not stand out so much. My plan worked! I love how the black countertops look in our farmhouse kitchen.
Painted Tile Floors
This Farmhouse Kitchen Makeover wouldn’t be complete without painting the floors. Despite 99% of people thinking I was crazy for wanting to paint our tile floors, after living with them for almost two years I just knew I would love them more if I painted them. I really did love the muted tones in the tile and think they would be beautiful in someone else’s home but they were just too dark in ours. However, knowing that painted tile floors were more than likely going to scratch and chip over time I was happy that these pretty muted colors would peak through, adding that warn, authentic farmhouse charm over time.

Farmhouse Kitchen Restoration: To Do List
Our kitchen makeover isn’t completely done but it has come too far not to share the progress. Things left to do include painting the trim, finishing installing the drawer pulls, caulk around the sink, and probably a few other things that I’m forgetting at the moment.
Well, there you have it, our ceiling to floor farmhouse kitchen makeover to date. Even though it is not 100% complete it has brought me so much joy as it is and I wanted to share the progress so far.
