Why did we get another dog?
This has been the most common reaction from family and friends. It’s true, we have a lot of dogs, but we were needing one more to complete our family. a couple years ago we brought home Nala and Ari, our two Great Pyrenees Live Stock Guardian dogs. Nala and Ari are amazing dogs, but very busy protecting their farm babies (our sheep, goats, and chickens). We also have Lola, our 14 year old Pomeranian. She is the princess of the house and although she loves her humans, she does not care for other animals or kids. This makes it difficult when she is the only dog around and gets a lot of undesired attention. Therefore, we needed a family dog.
What is a golden doodle?
Golden doodles are a cross between a poodle and golden retriever. There are several different “generations” of golden doodles. This relates to whether their parents were pure poodle and golden retriever, a golden doodle, or a combination. There are several different variations but the simple answer is that the generation your puppy is indicates the percentage of poodle and golden retriever it will be. Molly is an F3, so she is a good mix of both but appears to have more golden retriever traits.
Why did you get a golden doodle?
We based our breed search based on dogs that are known to make great family dogs. Poodles are very smart, easy to train, and don’t shed. Golden retrievers are a classic family dog and known for their loyalty and friendliness with adults, kids, and other animals. Combine these traits and you are left with the perfect family dog! Plus, you can’t deny their cuteness.
What is a mini golden doodle?
Golden doodles are categorized into three size groups; mini, small, and large or standard. Mini golden doodles are anything 35 pounds or less. Since Molly’s parents are both 30 pounds, she is expected to weigh around the same and be considered a mini golden doodle. We felt this size would be perfect based on our home and lifestyle.
Do golden doodles shed?
It’s a common misconception that all golden doodles don’t shed and are hypoallergenic. Although some are due to their poodle genetics, that is not the case for all golden doodles and it’s never a guarantee. Since Molly is an F3 golden doodle, it is likely that she will shed some, but likely a lot less compared to a typical shedding breed. From what I’ve read, only time will tell if a golden doodle will shed and you can’t tell what type of coat they have for sure until about four months old.
Phew, it feels so good to get this secret out there! Now onto sharing the next one (very soon). Any guesses? Leave them in the comments below or chat with me on Instagram where I share more daily behind the scenes and updates.
